The Power of a New Label: Breaking Free from Shame and Discovering Your True Identity

Have you ever stopped to consider the labels that have been attached to you throughout your life? Not the ones printed on your clothing, but the invisible ones that stick to your soul—the words spoken over you, the judgments made about you, the identities assigned to you by others or even by yourself.

Labels have a peculiar way of defining us. They tell us who we are, what we're worth, and what we can become. But here's the unsettling truth: most of the labels we carry weren't chosen by us, and many don't reflect who we were truly created to be.

Understanding the Weight of Labels
A label, by definition, is simply a phrase or name assigned to a person or thing. But in our lives, labels carry far more weight than that simple definition suggests. They're formed by events, tragedies, words, and moments that shape our understanding of ourselves.

The reality is that none of us were born cynical, untrusting, or broken. We weren't born feeling unloved, unimportant, or like outcasts. These identities developed over time as life happened to us—as words were spoken, as experiences accumulated, as disappointments mounted.

Some labels bring guilt, telling us we've done something wrong. But others bring shame, which whispers something far more damaging: that we are what's wrong. Shame doesn't just critique our actions; it attacks our very essence.

Living in a Shame Culture

We exist in what many call a "shame culture"—a society where conformity is maintained through the fear of being shamed. If you don't align with what's deemed acceptable, if you don't support the latest cause, if you step out of line in any way, shame becomes the weapon used against you.

Author Ruth Benedict defined a shame culture as one "in which conformity of behavior is maintained through the individual's fear of being shamed." This description perfectly captures our current moment, where social media and cancel culture amplify shame to unprecedented levels.

The problem with cancel culture isn't just that it's harsh—it's that it's fundamentally anti-Christ. It leaves no room for grace, no space for redemption, no possibility of mercy. It says, "That's who you were then, so that's who you are now and forever." It defines people by their worst moments and refuses to acknowledge growth, change, or transformation.

But this stands in stark contrast to the message of Jesus, who offers grace for our present and hope for our future, regardless of our past.

The Labels We Carry
Think about the labels that have been attached to you over the years. Perhaps they came from your ethnicity, where you were born, your family background, your education level, or your economic status. Maybe they came from mistakes you made as a teenager—mistakes that, decades later, still define how others see you.

Some labels seem positive at first: "most likely to succeed," "best dressed," "most athletic." But others cut deep: "dumbest," "ugliest," "most likely to get pregnant before graduation," "destined for jail or rehab."

Then there are the labels that come from our choices and circumstances: alcoholic, addict, cheater, liar, divorced, abused, damaged goods. These labels pile up like bumper stickers on a car until we can't even read our original design anymore. We lose sight of who we were created to be beneath all the accumulated identities.

God's Truth Is Bigger Than Your Label

Here's the transformative truth we need to grasp: God's truth is bigger than your label.

Even more powerful: God's truth is bigger than your current truth.

What is true about you today—the labels that have been attached to you for months, years, or even a lifetime—doesn't have to remain true when you walk out the door. You're one decision away from a different truth about your life.

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come."

The Message translation of Colossians 3:10 puts it beautifully: "Every item of your new way of life is custom made by the creator, with his label on it."

Think about that. Only the maker has the right to label their creation. When you see the Nike swoosh, you don't need words to know what it represents. That's because the creator put their mark on it. In the same way, only your Creator has the authority to truly define who you are.

Three Gifts God Wants to Give You
1. A New Name
Throughout Scripture, God consistently gives people new names that reflect their true identity rather than their circumstances or past failures.

Abram and Sarai—labeled as barren and childless—became Abraham and Sarah, meaning "father and mother of many nations." Jacob, whose name meant "deceiver" and who lived up to that label through manipulation and lies, became Israel, meaning "one who prevails with God."

God wants to do the same relabeling in our lives today. He wants to replace "defeated" with "overcomer," "guilty" with "forgiven," "inadequate" with "enough."

That may be what you did, but that is not who you are. Let that truth sink in deeply.

2. A New Purpose
Consider Simon Peter, a man labeled as unpredictable, undependable, mouthy, and quick-tempered. Jesus looked at this impulsive fisherman and said, "You are Peter [meaning 'rock'], and on this rock I will build my church."

At that moment, Peter had done nothing to deserve such a name. In fact, it took him a long time to grow into it. After making this bold declaration about Jesus being the Christ, Peter went on to deny Him three times. After the crucifixion, Peter even returned to his old life of fishing, as if nothing had changed.

But Jesus saw something in Peter that no one else could see—something Peter couldn't even see in himself. Jesus saw past all the labels to the person He had created Peter to be. And eventually, on the day of Pentecost, Peter became the rock Jesus declared him to be, preaching boldly and leading three thousand people to faith.

Jesus sees things in you that others cannot see. He sees things in you that you cannot see in yourself. He sees who He made you to be, even when that truth is covered by layers of labels.

3. A New Future
Perhaps you've been wandering aimlessly through life, buying into the identity that labels have created for you. Maybe you've thought your only purpose is just to get by, to survive another day under the weight of who you've been told you are.

But listen to what God says in Jeremiah 29:11-14: "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans for good, not for disaster. To give you a future and hope. In those days when you pray, I'm gonna listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you're gonna find me. I will be found by you, says the Lord. I will end your captivity and restore you."

What captivity? The captivity of the labels that have held you prisoner. The captivity of the "I am" statements you've accepted as truth about yourself.

Changing Your "I Am" Statement
What is your "I am" statement right now? Is it "I am always going to struggle"? "I am never going to have a good marriage"? "I am destined to repeat my parents' mistakes"? "I am too far gone to be redeemed"?

God can change the narrative of your story. He can transform the "I am" statements you speak over yourself.

The only way this transformation happens is through complete surrender—allowing the Holy Spirit to fill you so completely that the false labels begin to peel away, one by one, until nothing remains except who you were created to be.

Finding Out Who You Are
Ephesians 1:11-12 in The Message says it perfectly: "It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, He had His eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose He is working out in everything and everyone."

Long before you accumulated all those labels, before the shame and guilt, before the mistakes and the pain, God had His eye on you. He had designs on you for glorious living.

The labels may have covered up your original design, but they haven't destroyed it. Underneath all the accumulated identities, you're still the person God created you to be. And today can be the day you begin to rediscover that person.

Don't allow the labels of your past to tell you who you are. Don't allow words spoken over you, things done to you, or even your own failures to define your identity. Don't allow a parent, teacher, friend, ex, or even yourself to have the final say on who you are.

Only the Creator can tell you who you are.

And He's calling you by a new name today.
